Have you ever heard of the saying less is more? Decorating with less is a form of art. It’s actually called minimalism. Minimalism is the art of decorating with less.

Here are a few examples. Use one or two-tone colors. Decorate using a few pieces of artwork on the walls. A few pillows on the couch, a few magazines on the coffee table, an area rug, a throw, and some home decor items here and there.

Basically, you want to enjoy the true beauty of your space without all of the clutter. You want an open space that’s still decorated simplistically.

So, here’s a guide to decorating for Christmas using simple and elegant decor and taking the minimalist approach.

Spotlights
Tree Lights

Lights

When it comes to decorating, think of space and light. These two concepts will help you create a beautiful room. And it will help you create beautiful outdoor decor. During the holidays, people immediately think of Christmas lights. You don’t have to line your entire house with Christmas lights to feel complete and beautiful if you are looking for a simple style. Try using spotlights to bring focus and attention to one or a few items, like a wreath or a door design. Another thing that I love about spotlights is that you don’t need to bring out the heavy ladders because it’s simple to install by yourself. What makes spotlights so perfect is when you direct lights to a central focal point, everything else will blend perfectly.

Another light you can also try are tree lights for outdoors. It’s simple, decorative, and effortless beauty. Just put 1 or 2 weatherproof decor at the base of the tree and it will complete the minimalist look. For example. you can use galvanized metal buckets with Evergreen and branches or berries. You can try a Christmas scarecrow. Dress him wearing a warm hat, mittens, boots and a scarf. Or you can try a simple lantern with flameless candles. Another option is sitting a simple plant at the base. It can be artificial or real but opt for color to give it that pop.

Christmas Truck

This red vintage metal truck is perfect decoration for setting on kitchen, living room, mantel and more. It will look so cute and wonderful setting by your Christmas Tree!

White Candles in tray

Candles

You cannot go wrong with candles. They give off a warm, soft, and cozy ambiance. And the beauty is effortless. When it comes to arranging candles of various sizes, be sure to go from shortest to tallest when arranging from front to back. So, if they’re in a metal tray, you want to put the shortest in the front and the tallest in the back. Or place the tallest in the center with the shortest on the outside. It gives a sense of order. It makes you feel like everything is complete.

If you are placing them inside of a metal Lantern, you want to do an odd number. Use one or three because although two is an even number it appears incomplete and unbalanced inside of a lantern.

If you are placing candles on a table, you can place them here or there, or use them as a centerpiece.

Another cute option is getting a small paper bag and placing sand inside. Then get a taper candle and stick it inside the sand then light it. This is also a cute option. You don’t need a lot, only 4 or 6 to align your walkway or driveway. However, you must be mindful of the weather. If it is rainy, stormy, or windy, be prepared to do this every night. You must have enough candles.

You can opt for a flameless candle. Place one inside of each window. Therefore, people can see the candlelight from the street. Another candle option is placing candles throughout your home in various spaces. However, I must advise you to get flameless candles, especially if you have young children or pets for fire safety reasons.

Christmas tree with only lights
Tree decorated with 2 colors

Christmas Tree

Christmas trees are typically the focal point of Christmas decor. However, you can also choose not to have a Christmas tree. But if you do decide to do a Christmas tree and you’re wanting to do the minimal approach. You can do a plain Christmas tree with only lights while decorating the base of the Christmas tree using a Christmas Truck, lantern, or gift boxes.

Another simple approach to decorating with a Christmas tree, is to use ornaments all one color.

Outdoor String Lights

This G40 string light is compatible with dimmer to diming the brightness (dimmer not included in the package). You can DIY to create a warm and romantic atmosphere, bring you relaxation and happiness. All bulbs work independently, and the extinguishing of one bulb does not affect other bulbs.

Greenery

When it comes to greenery, you don’t have to go with the traditional Garland for Christmas. Nature is the ultimate decorator. Have you ever walked outside and just enjoy the beauty of nature, the greenery, the landscaping, and the animals. It is absolutely breathtaking. So, for Christmas Decor, let’s bring some of those elements indoors. And you can also decorate with them outdoors.

Try greenery like cedar eucalyptus, boxwood, juniper, magnolia, olive branch, noble fir, and pine. Use them as garland, centerpieces, draping a mirror, or etc. When using the real thing, remember some of them have a subtle fragrance. So, if you have allergies, be mindful of this. You also need to be mindful. Of how quickly they can dry out. But if you are using artificial. Then you are good to go.

Remember earlier when I was discussing spotlights? You can actually do wreaths made from some of these greeneries and place a spotlight on it as simple decor. And if you so happen to have a real Magnolia or any one of these trees in your yard, shine a simple spotlight on them as one of the focal points.

Using branches in decor

Branches

Branches will add charm to your home. You can use natural color without painting them to give you that outdoorsy feel. Branches can be used to make wreaths, curtain rods, fireplace decor, picture frames, wall mounts, table centerpieces and more. Try getting a few branches from outside and placing them inside of a tall vase and sitting them on the base of your fireplace. Or for outside use, you can place them inside of a tall, slender, structure and sit them outside of your door. Branches have a beautiful appeal all by itself. There are no limitations when it comes to your imagination.

Galvanized Pails

Perfect for adding greenery and branches.

Pinecone Decor

Pinecones

Pinecones can be placed in a tall glass tall vase with string lights. It can be placed in a bowl with one toned ornaments. Pinecones can be used to make a wreath. You can connect a ribbon or a bow to pinecones and hang them on the door. You can place them on your mantle or use them as centerpieces for your table.

berries on a bush

Berries

If you have any type of tree that produce berries well until the winter. Like the American Holly, Juniper Berry, or Snowberry, you can try highlighting the berries on the trees by……you guessed it! Shining a spotlight on those to bring attention to the beauty of the tree. Especially the trees with beautiful berry colors. You also have the option of using the color of the Berry in the tree as your primary color for decorating outdoors. Or you can use that color as the second color.

gifts wrapped in kraft paper

Simple Gift Wrap

When using gift wrap, go with one tone color. If you do not want to buy anything and you have brown paper bags, you can use the brown paper bags. If you need a large amount, purchase a roll of brown craft paper.

I like this idea because you can put any color with the craft paper. You can also put customization to the gifts by adding a picture on the front. Whether it’s artwork from the child or an actual photo of the person. You can also use greenery to decorate the gift. There are no limitations when it comes to your imagination.

Summary

So basically, all of the decor has one thing in common. That is lights. Lights are so beautiful that they can stand alone, or they can bring attention to a subject. No matter what decor you decide to use, shine a light on the object. Or have lights around the object.
